Tinnitus

What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ear, usually recognised as ringing, without the corresponding external sound. There are many possible causes and is often associated with hearing loss, exposure to loud sounds, middle ear infections or even wax on the eardrum. High stress levels, alcohol, coffee, aspirin and certain medications can sometimes exacerbate tinnitus.

Evaluation of tinnitus

A full audiological evaluation and an ENT specialist examination are necessary in order to identify the cause of the tinnitus and determine the appropriate treatment and/or management program. Sometimes tinnitus can be medically or surgically treated.

Neuromonics

Zail Hearing Care was the first Victorian audiology clinic to be accredited as a provider of a very successful treatment for tinnitus developed in Australia named Neuromonics. Neuromonics is a painless tinnitus treatment where music, embedded with an acoustic neural stimulus, is played to the patient. Numerous short treatments over a six month period help the brain to filter out tinnitus disturbance providing relief.
